🧠 Lección de la Semana: Verbos Reflexivos

Reflexive verbs are one of the most useful parts of Spanish, and one of the most misunderstood. The good news? Once you understand why they exist, they start to feel natural.

The simple rule: if the subject and the object of the action are the same person, you probably need a reflexive verb.

❝

Me lavo las manos. β†’ I wash my (own) hands. Lavo el carro. β†’ I wash the car.

There are 3 main categories, and each one works differently:

CategorΓa 1: Daily Routine & Personal Care

Verbs like levantarse, ducharse, acostarse. These describe actions you do to yourself. The action stays with you.

❝

Me despierto a las 7. β†’ I wake up at 7.

Mi hijo se ducha en las noches. β†’ My son showers at night.

ΒΏA quΓ© hora te acuestas? β†’ What time do you go to bed?

CategorΓa 2: Emotions & State Changes

Verbs like sentirse, ponerse nervioso/a, aburrirse. These express how you feel or how something affects you.

❝

Me pongo nervioso antes de hablar en pΓΊblico. β†’ I get nervous before speaking in public.

ΒΏTe aburres en reuniones largas? β†’ Do you get bored in long meetings?

CategorΓa 3: Reciprocal Actions (Each Other)

When the subject is plural, reflexive verbs can express mutual actions. Verbs like conocerse, ayudarse, and amarse belong here.

❝

Nos conocimos en una clase de espaΓ±ol. β†’ We met in a Spanish class.

Se ayudan mucho en el trabajo. β†’ They help each other a lot at work.

Mi esposa y yo nos amamos. β†’ My wife and I love each other.
