Fuerza Venezuela 🇻🇪
This week's email is different. I want to talk to you about my country.
I'm Venezuelan. I moved to the U.S. in 2015, and my family and I have built a life here, but Venezuela is still home, and right now, home is hurting.
What happened
On June 24, two earthquakes struck northern Venezuela less than a minute apart: magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, the strongest the country has felt since 1900.
Caracas, La Guaira, and the coastal towns were hit hardest. As of today, more than 920 people have died, thousands are injured, and many are still missing under the rubble.
Thousands more have lost their homes. Venezuela was already in a hard stretch before this, and on the ground, the response has been stretched thin.
It's not easy to watch from far away.
The help arriving
Colombia, right across the border, and home to the largest Venezuelan community abroad, sent more than 60 rescuers and 12 tons of aid, and ordinary people there have been filling donation centers by hand. Brazil, Mexico, Chile, El Salvador, Spain, and others have sent rescue teams, a field hospital, and supplies.
🇺🇸 The United States is running a large relief operation through U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), with Marine Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Jarrard is on the ground in Caracas, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer in Venezuela in decades.
